RVlife Spotlight Community:
GUN BARREL CITY

On the eastern shore of Cedar Creek Reservoir, Gun Barrel City offers lakefront living at its best. Beautiful views, boating, water sports, fishing and lovely lakeside parks are just outside your door.

The unique name of Gun Barrel fits the uncommonly friendly and laid-back mentality of its residents. These folks embody the city’s clever motto: “We shoot straight with you.”

However, unlike what you may be thinking, Gun Barrel didn’t get its name from the Wild West. In fact, the town is young and still growing. Started in 1970 by about 60 residents, Gun Barrel sits at a population just under 6,000 today.

In fact, the name has more to do with road construction than cowboys. As the story goes, two old men were sitting on the porch in their rocking chairs one evening, and one was giving directions to the other. He said, “You know, Joe, you follow the road down there where it’s straight as a gun barrel.” The association stuck, and when the city was founded on that very same stretch of road, area residents already had a logical name to use.

Today, Gun Barrel is an economic driver for Cedar Creek’s lakefront towns. It offers close-to-home medical care, along with essential retail and dining conveniences like Lowe’s Home Improvement, Walmart and Chili’s. Its character is defined by the fun shops and independent eateries in the area. For example, visit The Lake Escape boutique on Main Street for unique gifts or lakefront home décor. While you’re at it, you can treat yourself to a glass of wine, a cup of coffee or a nice lunch in the store’s café. For a true taste of the region, head over to Cedar Creek Brewery. Its indoor and outdoor seating areas provide the perfect place to gather with friends for a brewed beverage and lively conversation.

With a lake for entertainment, you can’t need much more. Gun Barrel has more anyway. A movie theater sits right in the center of town, and a first-rate arcade called Whatz-Up Entertainment is available just across the lake in Seven Points, Texas. Whatz-Up is the perfect place for the grandkids to hang out when they visit. It offers laser tag, a rock-climbing wall, bumper cars, go-carts and dozens of arcade games that come complete with all the flashing lights and fun you can handle.

So mosey on down to Gun Barrel and take a look for yourself. Just remember, don’t be in a hurry. Things around here run on lake time.
